Control and Treatment of Leishmaniasis: Century Long Challenges for Neglected Populations
Co-edited by Jaime Benchimol, Mady Malheiros Barbeitas and Denis Guedes Jogas Júnior
Beyond Thalidomide project member Mady Malheiros Barbeitas recently published a new book, co-edited by her and her colleagues Jaime Benchimol and Denis Guedes Jogas Júnior, both from Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC) at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil.
This book traces the gradual evolution of knowledge surrounding leishmaniasis, as well as efforts to develop more effective control strategies and diagnostic tools. It also examines the limited progress made in developing medicines for this complex and persistent group of diseases, a process characterised by considerable uncertainty. Leishmaniasis are part of the concept of neglected diseases that began to take shape in the 1970s.
The deterioration of public health conditions in Brazil following the establishment of the civil-military dictatorship (1964–1985) prompted a renewed emphasis on national programs supporting research and technological development under the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), alongside the reorganisation of universities. Research networks expanded, while interactions intensified with international organisations such as the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), associated with the World Health Organization (WHO). TDR acted as both a partner and a catalyst for initiatives such as the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), and the TB Alliance, which focuses on tuberculosis.
These global health actors played a crucial role in negotiations surrounding the development and use of medicines and new therapeutic regimens for leishmaniasis and other neglected diseases – a process marked by both achievements and setbacks, as this book demonstrates. The book also documents the suffering experienced by people affected by these diseases, recalling a fundamental principle enshrined in the Brazilian Constitution – one that remains far from fully realised: “Health is a right of all and a duty of the State...”
The book is available in Portuguese, for requests please contact Hucitec (publisher) at: https://lojahucitec.com.br/produto/controle-e-tratamento-das-leishmanioses-desafios-seculares-para-populacoes-negligenciadas-jaime-larry-benchimol-mady-malheiros-barbeitas-denis-guedes-jogas-junior-lina-pinto-garcia-luis-octavio/
